- 1917
Director: Sam Mendes Starring: Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Colin Firth There weren’t many selections for this year’s Bucket List, but this is the big one. Directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall), 1917 is a WWI epic made to look like just a few continuous shots, an uber-creative move by cinematographer Roger Deakins. Deakins is probably the best DP working today, having worked frequently with Joel & Ethan Coen, previously on Skyfall with Mendes, and on countless other beautiful films (e.g. Blade Runner 2049). 1917 just hit wide release and I’m very excited to catch it in the near future. |
- Brightburn
Director: David Yarovesky Starring: Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Abraham Clinkscales I was incredibly psyched for this dark, horrific take on a Superman origin story back in the spring, in no small part because James Gunn was heavily involved in the film’s creation. Unfortunately, it debuted to lukewarm reception during a busy few weeks for me, and I wasn’t able to catch it at the time. Movie night, anyone? |
- Long Shot
Director: Jonathan Levine Starring: Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, June Diane Raphael, O'Shea Jackson Jr. I love Seth Rogen. Long Shot, a political rom-com featuring Rogen alongside Charlize Theron, got pretty solid reviews. Oh, and the trailer heavily features David Bowie’s Modern Love, a personal favorite of mine. What can I say? I’m a sucker for Bowie. |
- The Art of Self-Defense
Director: Riley Stearns Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Alessandro Nivola, Imogen Poots, Steve Terada I honestly have no idea what this movie is, but to the best of my knowledge, it’s a screwball comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg that mostly flew under everyone’s radar this year. Could be interesting? I’m not gonna go outta my way to see this one, but maybe I’ll get around to it. |
- The Lighthouse
Director: Robert Eggers Starring: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, Valeriia Karaman My theater got this indie horror flick starring Robert Battinson & Willem “Also a scientist myself” Dafoe a little late, at a time when Doctor Sleep and Ford V Ferrari were also in theaters. It’s being hailed as one of the year’s best, so I’ll probably have to check it out eventually. Apparently there’s some pretty wild mermaid action. |
