10. Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom
Director: Colin Trevorrow Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, B.D. Wong Release Date: June 22, 2018 Kicking off today's list we've got the much-anticipated follow-up to 2015's Jurassic World, the Jurassic Park quasi-reboot that pretty much broke every record ever. This movie honestly wouldn't have cracked my Top 10 if not for the fact that Fox's The New Mutants was recently delayed to 2019, but here we are. I'm moderately excited for this movie. Honestly, the trailer didn't really do anything for me, but I'm expecting this sequel to be as brisk and enjoyable of a sci-fi/action movie as its predecessor. |
9. Ant-Man & The Wasp
Director: Peyton Reed Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer Release Date: July 6, 2018 By default, any MCU movie is basically guranteed at least a mention on this list. And while this is the one I'm least excited for this year - I mean we barely know anything about it - there is a lot to be excited about here. Michelle Pfeiffer is a great pick for Janet Van Dyne, and Marvel's already announced several other interesting casting choices. I'm definitely looking forward to this one. |
8. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Director: David Yates Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Jude Law, Johnny "Piece of Trash" Depp Release Date: November 16, 2018 At number eight today we have yet another sequel, the follow-up to 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Much like with Jurassic World and Ant-Man, I thought the first Fantastic Beasts was completely fine. What I'm most excited for about The Crimes of Grindelwald is more expansion of the Harry Potter universe. Harry Potter Cinematic Universe? HPCU? Let's make that a thing. Anyway, this movie will bring us Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore, and that'll definitely be something worth seeing. But then again, we've gotta put up with more of Johnny Depp's stupid face. Ya know, maybe I don't need to see this movie after all. . . |
7. A Quiet Place
Starring: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds
Release Date: April 6, 2018
Okay, I had to throw at least one indie on here. I actually heard about this one from Mark Ellis's most anticipated on the Schmoes Know YouTube channel, so props to him. (He's never gonna read this...) But this film stars real-life couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt as a fictional couple raising a family in a secluded forest, where they have to remain silent at all times so as to not draw the presence of evil forces all around them. It's a really intriguing premise for a horror movie, and the trailer is genuinely intense. Give it a watch here. And with Krasinski making his directorial debut, I'll definitely be giving A Quiet Place a watch this April.
6. Ready Player One
Director: Steven Spielberg Starring: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance Release Date: March 30, 2018 At number six today we've got Spielberg's next movie, an avalanche of 80's pop nostaligia merged with futuristic sci-fi. Honestly, I feel like this movie could be one of two things: fantistically great or tremendously terrible. But the first trailer intrigued me so much that I actually bought and read the novel it's based on, and I must say, I'm interested to see how they pull this off. Or, more aptly, if they pull it off. Because there's a lot in the book that seems like it'd need massive amounts of CGI, and the trailers certainly suggest that they're going this route. But hey, it's Spielberg. He's usually good, right? |
5. Incredibles 2
Director: Brad Bird Starring: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Catherine Keener Release Date: June 15, 2018 I was just a kid when I saw The Incredibles, but I remember thinking "Wow, I can't wait to see the next one!" It ends on a cliffhanger and everything! But they never made it, and eventually I grew up into the suave, debonair young man that I am today. And finally, we're getting The Incredibles 2. I haven't been this excited for a Pixar movie in a long time - Brad Bird's directing again, all the old voice actors are back, and the teaser trailer was pretty sick. So yeah, I'll definitely be seeing this one. |
4. Black Panther
Director: Ryan Coogler Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Freeman Release Date: February 16, 2018 Everything we've seen of this movie so far seems on point. T'Challa continues to be a bada$$, Michael B. Jordan seems like a perfectly menacing villain, and all the promo material has this great, majestic vibe. Plus we've got news that Kendrick Lamar will be collaborating on the soundtrack? What more do you want? Andy Serkis? Well, they've got him too! I can't wait to see where Ryan Coogler takes Wakanda, and I suspect this movie will work towards setting up Infinity War in more than a few ways. But more on that later... |
3. Deadpool 2
Director: David Leitch Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller Release Date: May 18, 2018 Nobody expected the first Deadpool to be good. It was released in the February of 2016, a notoriously hit-or-miss month for movies. But against all odds Deadpool shocked the world, both by being a fantastic twist on the superhero genre and possibly having the only fourth-wall break inside a fourth-wall break on film to date. So I'm very excited to see where this sequel goes. The marketing has all been batsh!t insane so far, which is obviously on brand for the Merc with a Mouth. Looking forward to it. |
2. Mission: Impossible 6
Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Henry Cavill
Release Date: July 27, 2018
So we barely know anything about this movie. And yet, I enjoy this franchise so much that M:I-6 takes Runner-Up on my Most Anticipated of 2018 list. It's pretty amazing that this Tom Cruise-led franchise has sneakily become (in my opinion) the best spy series around today. Think about it - Bourne's dead in the water, Bond's been hit-or-miss as of late, and while the first Kingsman was truly impressive, last year's The Golden Circle was, quite bluntly, a major letdown. But the last (and only) bad Mission Impossible movie was the hilariously ridiculous Mission: Impossible 2, all the way back in Y2K. These are smart, intriguing spy thrillers with great action (due in no small part to having a lead actor who's genuinely insane), and I can't wait for the next installment. The only concern I have is that this'll be the first of the series to reuse a director, as McQuarrie also directed 2015's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, and I kinda enjoyed how each new entry brought a new directorial style. But hey, I'm still super-jacked to see the movie that made Warner Bros CGI Henry Cavill's upper lip in Justice League. Because if that doesn't say great filmmaking, I don't know what does.
1. Avengers: Infinity War (Obviously...)
Directors: Anthony & Joe Russo Starring: Literally Everyone Release Date: May 4, 2018 You knew this would be here. I knew this would be here. Avengers: Infinity War has been 6 years in the making, ever since Thanos first reared his magenta head in a post-credit scene for 2012's The Avengers. It's the culmination of a decade of excellent universe building from Marvel, and I couldn't possibly be more excited. I can't wait for May 4th, so I can see it an obscene amount of times over opening weekend. |
Honorable Mentions!
- Creed II
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren
Release Date: November 21, 2018
This is an interesting one, because I haven't actually seen 2015's Creed in its entirety. I really enjoyed about half of it, but then I got busy for whatever reason and never finished it. In fact, I've actually only seen Rocky, Rocky II, and about half of Rocky III & Creed. Nevertheless, I understand that Creed is fantastic, and many people are excited to see where the sequel goes. I'll have to play catch-up before this one releases November 21st.
- Solo: A Star Wars Story
Director: Ron Howard Starring: Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke Release Date: May 25, 2018 So, there's another Star Wars film coming out this year. Of course it's at least gonna pop up on my Most Anticipated. But honestly, I'm not that jazzed for this movie. There's been so many stories about production issues, we haven't really seen anything about it yet, and honestly, I think Disney's made a mistake here. Solo is a prequel, and I'd say there's a greater chance that Disney & Lucasfilm damage the mythos of an incredibly iconic character than there is of them creating a great origin story that is universally acclaimed. Just look at how polarizing The Last Jedi has been (more on that soon, I hope!) Either way, it's Star Wars, and I'm basically contractually obligated to show up. |
- Aquaman
Director: James Wan Starring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson Release Date: December 21, 2018 Not much to say about this one, other than Jason Momoa was one of the better parts of Justice League and I'm looking forward to seeing how a competent director like James Wan can expand the DCEU. You might say that this is their "sink or swim" moment. Get it? Because it's Aquaman. And it's water. . . gosh, I'm funny. |
- Bohemian Rhapsody
Starring: Rami Malek, Aiden Gillen, Lucy Boynton, Mike Myers
Release Date: December 25, 2018 (Jesus's B-Day!)
I know practically nothing about this movie, other than that it's an announced biopic about Freddie Mercury, one of our greatest Rock & Roll icons. Throw in a solid cast, including Aiden Gillen & Lucy Boynton of Sing Street fame, and I'm sure I'll be catching this film come December.
